onwards, 
the 
Tainos 
in 
the

densely 
populated 
islands 
moved 
away 
from 
societies 
organized 
along 
tribal 
lines 
to 
societies 
characterized 
by 
chiefdoms

cacicazgos

The 
leaders 
of 
these 
societies 
were 
known 
as 
chiefs 
or 
caciques
. 
One 
of

leading 
specialists 
on 
the 
Amerindians, 
Jalil 
Sued-Badillo, 
suggests 
that 
there 
was 
a 
direct 
relationship 
between 
population 
size 
and 
social 
complexity.

meant
