Der Begriff 'historisches Präsens' ist zu einem wenig differenzierten Sammelbegriff geworden, der syntaktisch und pragmatisch sehr unterschiedliche Präsenstypen umfasst. Die vorliegende Monographie Werk arbeitet die Unterscheidungen des historischen Präsens heraus: das aspektuelle, aoristische Präsens (oft 'episches Präsens') von der Antike bis ins Mittelalter, das perspektivische, vergangenheitsaktualisierende Präsens (das eigentliche 'historische Präsens'), das sich vor allem ab dem 16. Jahrhundert etabliert, und schließlich das narrative Präsens als durchgängiges Erzähltempus in Romanen des 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts. Die intermedialen Einflüsse durch den Film begünstigen die Verbreitung und Etablierung des Präsens als neues, alternatives Erzähltempus im Roman. Anders als häufig angenommen, bewahrt es dabei durchaus seine Grundsemantik. Die Präsensverwendung in narrativen Texten wird am Beispiel des Portugiesischen, Spanischen, Französischen, Deutschen und Englischen besprochen mit einem Ausblick auf das Russische.
