La naissance du sionisme dans l'Europe de la fin du 19e siècle peut être ramenée à la croissance de l'antisémitisme. Notamment des évènements comme l'affaire Dreyfus ont contribué à créer une organisation pour mettre en oeuvre la fondation d'un État juif en Palestine. Or, les réflexions politiques et juridiques entreprises par Theodor Herzl renouent à la fois avec les concepts fondateurs de la Troisième République et avec les idées du socialisme utopique. Le projet sioniste, qui avait bien connu des prédécesseurs à l'aube des temps modernes, a déclenché un débat parmi les intellectuels juifs et non juifs en Europe, un débat qui est encore loin d'être clos. Les textes réunis dans le présent recueil traitent - tout en mettant l'accent sur le 19e et 20e siècles - ce rêve d'un retour en Terre promise se faisant réalité. Le 60e anniversaire de la fondation de l'Etat d'Israël en 2008 ainsi que le centenaire de la ville de Tel Aviv célébré en 2009 devraient donner lieu à une réévaluation des rapports de la littérature francophone avec Israël.
