Die Geschichte der Schückings - das ist die mehrere Jahrhunderte umspannende Saga einer bedeutenden Familie aus Westfalen.Bereits im 18. Jahrhundert traten Angehörige als hohe Amtsträger im Fürstbistum Münster hervor, doch der heute bekannteste Schücking ist der Schriftsteller Levin Schücking, ein Freund der Droste. Über ihn und seine ebenfalls schreibende Ehefrau Louise von Gall kamen literarische Bestrebungen in die Familie; fast alle Nachfahren griffen zur Feder. Fast vergessen sind heute hingegen die linksliberalen Brüder Lothar Engelbert, Walther und Levin Ludwig. Ihre im Mittelpunkt des Buches stehenden pazifistischen Lebenswege sind eingebettet in die Gesamterzählung einer im 15. Jahrhundert beginnenden Familiengeschichte.
