Im Januar 814 verstarb Karl der Große, König der Franken, König der Langobarden und west-römischer Kaiser, in seiner Aachener Pfalz "Aquispalatium", wo er die letzten 20 Jahre fast ununterbrochen verbracht hatte. Sein Herrschaftsgebiet hat Karl der Große indes durch militärische Expansion und Unterwerfung stark vergrößert. Es reichte von der Elbe im Osten bis zu den Pyrenäen im Westen und von der Nordseeküste bis Mittelitalien.Die Zentralisierung der Herrschaft und Reformen auf rechtlichem, ökonomischem, religiösem und kulturellem Gebiet machten das fränkische Reich zu einem stabilen Verband. Auch deshalb gilt Karl der Große vielen als ein Begründer des modernen Europa. Mit Entschlossenheit hat Karl der die ihm gegebene Macht genutzt. Ausdruck dieses Gestaltungswillens ist auch die symbolgeladene Architektur der Pfalzkapelle des Aachener Domes. Der Aachener Dom gehört zu den besterhaltenen Baudenkmälern der Karolingerzeit und wurde 1978 als erstes deutsches Denkmal in die Liste des UNESCO-Weltkulturerbes aufgenommen.
