The Sacred Writings of Saint Ignatius

About this book

"The Sacred Writings Of..." provides you with the essential works among the Early Christian writings. The volumes cover the beginning of Christianity until before the promulgation of the Nicene Creed at the First Council of Nicaea.More than one of the earliest ecclesiastical writers have given credence, though apparently without good reason, to the legend that Ignatius was the child whom the Savior took up in His arms, as described in Mark 9: 35. It is also believed, and with great probability, that, with his friend Polycarp, he was among the auditors of the Apostle St. John.Contents: INTRODUCTORY NOTE TO THE EPISTLE OF IGNATIUS TO THE EPHESIANS.The Epistle of Ignatius to the EphesiansThe Epistle of Ignatius to the MagnesiansThe Epistle of Ignatius to the TralliansThe Epistle of Ignatius to the RomansThe Epistle of Ignatius to the PhiladelphiansThe Epistle of Ignatius to the SmyrnaeansThe Epistle of Ignatius to PolycarpIntroductory Note to the Syriac Version of the Ignatian Epistles. The Epistle of Ignatius to PolycarpThe Second Epistle of Ignatius to the EphesiansThe Third Epistle of the Same St. IgnatiusIntroductory Note to the Spurious Epistles of Ignatius. The Epistle of Ignatius to the TarsiansThe Epistle of Ignatius to the AntiochiansThe Epistle of Ignatius to Hero, a Deacon of AntiochThe Epistle of Ignatius to the PhilippiansThe Epistle of Maria the Proselyte to IgnatiusThe Epistle of Ignatius to Mary at Neapolis, Near Zarbus. The Epistle of Ignatius to St. John the ApostleA Second Epistle of Ignatius to St. John. The Epistle of Ignatius to the Virgin MaryIntroductory Note to the Martyrdom of Ignatius. The Martyrdom of Ignatius

Information

His friend1 Ignatius to John the holy presbyter.

If thou wilt give me leave, I desire to go up to Jerusalem, and see the faithful2 saints who are there, especially Mary the mother, whom they report to be an object of admiration and of affection to all. For who would not rejoice to behold and to address her who bore the true God from her3 own womb, provided he is a friend of our faith and religion? And in like manner [I desire to see] the venerable James, who is surnamed Just, whom they relate to be very like Christ Jesus in appearance,4 in life, and in method of conduct, as if he were a twin-brother of the same womb. They say that, if I see him, I see also Jesus Himself, as to all the features and aspect of His body. Moreover, [I desire to see] the other saints, both male and female. Alas! why do I delay? Why am I kept back? Kind5 teacher, bid me hasten [to fulfil my wish], and fare thou well. Amen.
