En Catalogne. Les montagnes frontières. Le monastère Laterran, couvent de l'ordre des augustins et de l'observance de Saint-Ruf.
L'ancien cimetière du couvent. Aspect de jardin sauvage. C'est le mois d'avril du midi. Fleurs et soleil. Croix et tombeaux dans le gazon et sous les arbres. Sol bossué de fosses. Au fond, la muraille d'enceinte du monastère, très élevée, mais tombant en ruine. Une grande brèche la fend en deux jusqu'à terre, et donne sur la campagne. Près d'un pan de ce mur qui revient en équerre, une croix de fer plantée sur une fosse.
Une autre croix très haute, avec le triangle mystique doré, est au sommet d'un perron de pierre et domine le cimetière.
Sur le devant, au ras du sol, une ouverture carrée, encadrée de pierres plates de niveau avec l'herbe. À côté on voit une longue dalle qui semble destinée à boucher au besoin l'ouverture. Dans l'ouverture on distingue les premières marches d'un étroit escalier de pierre qui descend et s'enfonce dans un caveau. C'est un sépulcre dont le couvercle a été enlevé et dont on aperçoit l'intérieur. La dalle qui est auprès, est le couvercle.
Au lever du rideau, LE PRIEUR du couvent, en habit d'augustin, est en scène. Au fond du théâtre passe en silence un moine, vieux, vêtu d'une robe de dominicain. LE MOINE marche lentement, salue en fléchissant le genou toutes les croix qu'il rencontre, et disparaît. LE PRIEUR reste seul.
SCÈNE PREMIÈRE
LE PRIEUR DU COUVENT, puis UN HOMME.
LE PRIEUR, chauve avec une couronne de cheveux gris, barbe blanche, robe de bure. Il examine le mur d'enceinte et rôde pensif parmi les tombeaux.
LE PRIEUR
Couvent mal gardé. Ronce et broussaille. Dégât
Que fait dans les lieux saints le temps, vieux renégat.
(Il considère la crevasse du mur.)
Brèche par où pourrait s'échapper un novice.
On dirait que ce mur refuse le service
Et que, d'être debout trop longtemps, il est las.
Il ressemble à nos droits qui s'écroulent, hélas !
Ils ont aussi leur rouille, ils ont aussi leur brèche.
Le vert rameau divin dans nos mains se dessèche.
Les papes à lutter deviennent paresseux.
Ah! chez nous aujourd'hui les princes sont chez eux;
Noirs, ils passent sur nous comme l'ombre des aigles.
Plus d'observance, plus de chartes, plus de règles.
Nous nous courbons toujours plus bas, de peur des coups.
