Die zweite Fassung unterscheidet sich von der ersten unter anderem dadurch, dass sie chronologisch durcherzählt ist und dass der ganze Roman in der Ich-Perspektive geschrieben ist, und nicht nur Heinrichs Jugendgeschichte. Vor Allem aber tritt an die Stelle des tragischen Endes - Keller sprach vom "zypressendunklen Schluss" seines Romans - ein versöhnlicheres: Heinrich kommt gerade noch früh genug, um die Verzeihung der sterbenden Mutter zu erlangen. Er bekommt ein geregeltes, aber anspruchsloses Amt. Judith kehrt aus Amerika zurück und beide verbringen gemeinsame Zeit, mal nahe beieinander, mal über längere Zeit örtlich getrennt, - bis zu Judiths Tod nach 20 Jahren. (aus wikipedia.de)
