Il volume presenta una ricostruzione complessiva della filosofia della natura kantiana, dalle opere giovanili fino agli ultimi manoscritti. Nella prima parte è proposta una ricognizione generale del rapporto tra fisica e metafisica lungo l'intero sviluppo della filosofia di Kant: dagli scritti precedenti alla «Critica della ragion pura» fino al ruolo fondamentale che la fondazione filosofica della fisica (non soltanto newtoniana) riveste per il compimento del sistema del criticismo. La seconda parte si concentra sulla metafisica della natura corporea esposta nei «Principi metafisici della scienza della natura» del 1786 e costituisce il primo studio monografico complessivo in lingua italiana su quest'opera. La terza parte è dedicata al rapporto tra fisica e filosofia negli scritti successivi, in particolare nei manoscritti dell'«Opus postumum» (1796-1803), di cui viene messa in rilievo la continuità problematica rispetto a tutto il periodo del criticismo.
