Strategies for the Exam

What Will I See on the AP Chemistry Exam?

One May morning, you stroll confidently into the testing center, where you’re scheduled to take the AP Chemistry exam. You know your stuff. You paid attention in class, followed your textbook, took plenty of notes, and reviewed using your test prep guide. So, what content and types of questions can you expect to see on the test?

General Content

The AP Chemistry exam content comes from six major “big ideas” that commonly make up a general course in chemistry. These general categories are summarized here:

1. Atomic Structure: periodicity, spectroscopy, stoichiometry

2. Property Relationships: Classification of substances, molecules, solutions, phases of mater

3. Transformations: physical and chemical processes, electrochemistry

4. Kinetics: rate and collision theory, mechanisms

5. Thermodynamics: heat and heat transfer, chemical energy, free energy, calorimetry

6. Equilibrium: acid/base, solubility, equilibrium and thermodynamics
