Prefazione di Tito StagnoRocco Petrone fu il direttore del lancio dell'Apollo 11 da Cape Kennedy il 16 luglio 1969: l'uomo del «go» alla missione che avrebbe portato i primi uomini sulla Luna. Figlio di contadini lucani che avevano cercato fortuna in America, era nato a Amsterdam, New York, nel 1926. Non aveva ancora sei mesi quando il padre morì in un terribile incidente, travolto da un treno. Lo attendeva una vita di sacrifici ai quali non si sottrasse. Imponente nel fisico e vivace nell'intelligenza, si pagò gli studi lavorando. A diciassette anni fu ammesso all'Accademia militare di West Point, dove fece parte della squadra vincitrice del campionato nazionale di football. Diventato ufficiale dell'esercito americano, completò gli studi al Massachusetts Institute of Technology e divenne uno dei maggiori esperti di missili e rampe di lancio. Voluto alla Nasa da von Braun, lavorò alla costruzione del Saturno V e della mitica rampa di lancio 39 da cui partirono gli astronauti verso la Luna. Poi fu promosso direttore del programma Apollo e, al culmine della carriera, divenne il numero tre della Nasa. Mori a ottant'anni a Palos Verdes Estates, una cittadina costiera della California, dove si era ritirato per dedicarsi ai suoi amati studi sulla guerra civile americana.
