Recollections of Will Eisner and PS Magazine

In 1951, Will acquired a contract from the army to create a monthly magazine instructing enlisted personnel on how to repair and maintain equipment used in the course of their duties. When he came home and told me, I didn’t have any mixed feelings; it sounded wonderful. Will could use his talents, as he had with Army Motors during World War II, to translate dry technical manuals into graphic, easy-to-understand instructions.

Naively, we never anticipated the aggra- vation that would follow. I remember twenty years of machinations that went into the annual negotiations regarding whether or not to renew Will’s contract— __________________________________________

each had to be put out to bid according to government regulations and could possibly be awarded to another contractor. The decision, to Will’s frustration, would always be made by people who had little knowledge of sequential art and who thought the intellectual approach of academia preferable. After tests were conducted that overwhelmingly showed that soldiers better understood technical material when it was presented using Will’s graphic approach, opposition grudgingly disappeared.
