HELEN, mid-thirties
A late-summer evening.
A wooden kitchen table.
A blue-glass bowl full of plums.
Two empty wine glasses.
A bottle of red wine.
A small collection of plain polythene bags on the floor.
A man and woman, both in their early thirties.
DANIEL and HELEN.
DANIEL pours the wine.
HELEN
It’s nice to have you back.
DANIEL
It’s good to be –
It’s strange.
He kisses her.
HELEN
You smell of cigarettes.
DANIEL
Yes. I know.
HELEN
Were you smoking?
DANIEL
Everyone smokes there. It’s almost rude not to.
And it was a tense environment.
It’s difficult to explain.
I wanted to smoke.
HELEN
So you’ve started smoking.
DANIEL
I haven’t started smoking.
I smoked.
There is a difference.
HELEN
You can’t smoke in the house.
DANIEL
Of course not.
Something of a pause.
What do you think of the wine?
HELEN tastes.
HELEN
Mmm.
DANIEL
Good, isn’t it?
It’s made by monks.
I visited the vineyard.
The vineyard is thousands of years old.
Biblical.
Hardly changed in a thousand years.
HELEN
You should call Sam, by the way.
She left a message for you.
I wonder if there’s maybe a job.
DANIEL
Okay.
I’ll do it tomorrow.
HELEN
It’s just we’re getting close to the overdraft limit, Daniel.
DANIEL
Sure.
HELEN
We’ve been tightening the belt here while you’ve been gone.
DANIEL
Right.
I’ll call her.
Something of a pause.
It’s surprisingly good, though, isn’t it.
