Every One

About this book

Mary, a mother of two, is doing the ironing one Saturday morning when she feels something on her shoulder. It's the beginning of a series of events that will change things for ever. For every one.

A re-imagining of Everyman, one of the oldest stories in English drama, Jo Clifford's bold and haunting play tells a deeply emotional and warmly funny story of a voyage into the heart of living – and of what it means to lose the people we love.

Every One was first performed at the Royal Lyceum, Edinburgh, in 2010, and was revived in a new production by Chris Goode & Company at Battersea Arts Centre, London, in 2016.

Information

ACT ONE
The family come onstage. MARY, JOE, MAZZ, KEVIN and the MOTHER. The MOTHER is in a wheelchair. Each go to their own space. And then there is a pause.
JOE
You first.
MARY
Why me?
JOE
It’s your play.
MARY
I suppose it is.
JOE
You always said –
MARY
Women should be more at the centre of things. I know.
JOE
Here you are then.
MARY
Yes. Well.
I’m…
I’m…
Well it’s hard to say, isn’t it, hard to explain who you are.
What would you say?
I’ll say…
I’ll just stick to the facts.
My name is Mary Jane Hunter Spring.
Hunter’s my husband’s name but I didn’t want to lose my own.
So when we got married I just kind of tacked it on.
And it’s a wee bit double-barrelled and pompous but I like it.
And… I live with my husband, Joe, short for Joseph, which he hates, so it’s easy to wind him up if I need to, and he’s a teacher and we have two children: Mazz who’s just left school, and wants to be a fashion designer, and Kev who’s about to go into sixth form and spends his whole life on the computer.
And we live in an ordinary kind of house. And it’s a bit messy.
We’re just normal people, really. So I don’t know what all the fuss is about.
And, well, I work as a tax inspector. Which isn’t all that normal I suppose.
For some reason our friends find it hilarious.
Watch out here’s the tax inspector.
Better stash the money away.
How about hiding...
