HOW TO SCORE THE CVLT-C, CVLT-II, AND CVLT3
Although the administration of California Verbal Learning Test (CVLT) is relatively straightforward and easy to learn, completing the scoring is more complex and may take longer to learn. However, understanding how the scores are derived is critical to accurately interpreting them. The most efficient and error-free approach to scoring is to use the digital scoring software. Several scores are available only through the scoring software due to the methods required to derive them. However, because digital scoring is not feasible in all situations and it is important to understand how scores are derived even if you use the scoring software, this chapter breaks down scoring on the CVLT, from classifying responses to deriving standard scores. It includes directions on how to hand score the primary scores and some process scores. The methods used to derive all available scores are described in the appropriate CVLT manual. If you are using only the primary recall and recognition trial scores, hand scoring will require approximately 10 min to complete. To derive all the scores possible through hand scoring, approximately 30–45 min are required depending upon the length and complexity of the examinee's responses and your familiarity with scoring. If you use different editions of the CVLT, pay particular attention to calculation differences across editions.
Throughout this chapter, figures are presented to illustrate key information required to appropriately classify and score responses. In order to maintain test security and protect copyright, these examples use fake word lists. These lists are used for illustrative purposes only and are not intended as alternate word lists to be used within CVLT.
CLASSIFYING RESPONSES ON RECALL TRIALS
The first step in scoring CVLT, either digitally or by hand, is to classify each response within each trial as either correct or incorrect. Incorrect responses are further classified as repetitions (perseverations on CVLT-C) or intrusions. Repetitions are either correct or incorrect words that are repeated at least once during a trial. Intrusions are responses that are not words from the current list. There is a column on the record form to classify each response as correct (C), Repetition (R), or Intrusion (I). On CVLT-C, repeti...
