In the foregoing pages we have traced the vari-colored architecture of Old Spain from its home-land, through Mexico into the various future American states, where, introduced by Spanish priests, soldiers and colonists, it took root and where, in response to new demands, as time went on, it produced unique, indigenous expressions. Had it not been for the “accident of history” that awarded this one-time Hispanic empire to an Anglo-Saxon race, perhaps there would never have been a break in architectural tradition of this area. As it happened, however, Mexico and her provinces north of the Rio Grande in time became independent of Spain, and Florida and the Gulf Coast were likewise lost to Spanish possession. In turn also, possessions on this sie of the Rio Grande were lost by Mexico and the great Southwest witnessed the advent of conquerors of entirely different blood, history and ideals.

These Yankees from the Atlantic Seaboard for a time tried to make the American Colonial and its derivatives give expression to life in these great open spaces still largely peopled by descendants of the original Spanish stock and the Mexicans who, during the long Spanish regime, had drifted into the country.
