The Cloud in IoT-enabled Spaces

About this book

The Cloud in IoT-enabled Spaces addresses major issues and challenges in IoT-based solutions proposed for the Cloud. It paves the way for IoT-enabled spaces in the next generation cloud computing paradigm and opens the door for further innovative ideas. Topics include Cloud-based optimization in the IoT era, scheduling and routing, medium access, data caching, secure access, uncertainty, home automation, machine learning in wearable devices, energy monitoring, and plant phenotyping in farming.

Smart spaces are solutions where Internet of Things (IoT)-enabling technologies have been employed towards further advances in the lifestyle. It tightly integrates with the existing Cloud infrastructure to impact several fields in academia and industry.

The Cloud in IoT-enabled Spaces provides an overview of the issues around small spaces and proposes the most up-to-date alternatives and solutions. The objective is to pave the way for IoT-enabled spaces in the next-generation Cloud computing and open the door for further innovative ideas.

1.1 Introduction

Survivability services are often the most demanding in urgent applications, and various types of disasters. Newfangled devices, systems, applications, and interfaces are expected to become key interconnected enabling technologies in Internet of Things (IoT) [1]. Existing communication schemes for IoT devices run over Wireless Area Network (WAN), 3G and 4G networks. Therefore, IoT allows achieving multiple urgent tasks and gather useful and actionable information [2]. Indeed, it will allow performing several tasks over the cloud including beforehand warning, communicating, remote controlling, etc. [3]. And thus, the IoT paradigm is in need for a large-scale distributed system such as the cloud, where numerous and heterogeneous resources with respect to hardware and software are managed. For example, Figure 1.1 depicts applications of IoT based real-time scenario for remote monitoring system in a smart city, whereas nodes continuously monitor critical parameters depends on the application. Therefore, the critical nature of these applications in smart environment compels to have a reliable and stable connections towards the cloud computing.

Stability and the survivability of the connection are important in these types of applications. Moreover, IoT needs to guarantee certain quality properties as the minimum requirement to meet service providers’ and end users’ requirements. Quality of Service (QoS) is thus a very important aspect to be considered in IoT applications, bec...
