Die Publikationsreihe 'Religious Communities and Civil Society in Europe' betrachtet das europĂ€ische VerhĂ€ltnis von Religionsgemeinschaften und die Zivilgesellschaft, welche in jĂŒngster Zeit an Bedeutung gewonnen hat. Angesichts der Entwicklung und Konsolidierung eines Konzepts von Zivilgesellschaft als eigenstĂ€ndiger Arena des kollektiven Handelns in der Gesellschaft, erhĂ€lt die Frage der Positionierung der Glaubensgemeinschaften eine neue Dimension. In welchem MaĂe können und wollen sie ĂŒber die rituelle Heilsvermittlung hinaus gesellschaftliche Partizipations-, Integrations-, Sozialisations- oder Interessenartikulationsfunktionen â und damit genuin zivilgesellschaftliche Aufgaben â ĂŒbernehmen? Im Rahmen des der Publikationsreihe zugrundeliegende Forschungsprojekts gingen Autorinnen und Autoren unterschiedlicher Disziplinen in mehreren EuropĂ€ischen LĂ€ndern der Fragen nach: Wie es um die Zuordnung der Religionsgemeinschaften steht und ob sie, möglicherweise sogar unabhĂ€ngig von ihrem Rechtsstatus, der Zivilgesellschaft neuer Definition zuzuordnen sind?
Der zweite Band dieser Reihe betrachtet an zwei LĂ€nderbeispielen Polens und der Ukraine das VerhĂ€ltnis von Religionsgemeinschaften und Zivilgesellschaft im postsowjetischen Raum. Zudem werden evangelische Gemeinden in lokalen Zivilgesellschaften in Deutschland, so wie die Beziehungen zwischen Religionsgemeinschaften und Zivilgesellschaft zum Staat in Frankreich und GroĂbritannien beleuchtet. Des Weiteren wird das VerhĂ€ltnis von katholischen Religionsgemeinschaften und der Zivilgesellschaft, sowie die sozialpolitische Rolle der Hermeneutik heiliger Texte betrachtet. Als auĂereuropĂ€ische Perspektive auf den Fragenkomplex wird in Form einer Fallstudie, der Aufstieg der politischen Macht der brasilianischen Evangelikalen dargestellt und religiös politische Ideologien am Bespiel des Islams behandelt.

Authors and Contributors
Frank Adloff studied Sociology, Economics and Philosophy at the Universities of Marburg, Jena and FU Berlin. He holds a PhD in Sociology from the FU Berlin. He was Professor at the FU Berlin and at the UniversitĂ€t Erlangen-NĂŒrnberg and is currently Professor of Sociology at the Department of Socioeconomics at University Hamburg. Frank Adloff is member of the editorial board of âZeitschrift fĂŒr Theoretische Soziologieâ and of the book series âBĂŒrgergesellschaft und Demokratieâ. His fields of expertise are Social Theory, Sociology of Religion, Philanthropy as well as Gift and Reciprocity.
Edith Archambault is Emeritus Professor at the Sorbonne University of Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne and Vice-President of the âAssociation pour le dĂ©veloppement des donnĂ©es sur lâĂconomie socialeâ (ADDES). Furthermore, she was local associate for France of the Johns Hopkins International Comparison of the Nonprofit Sector program, phase 1 and 2, then member of the advisory committee for the UN Handbook of the non-profit Institutions in the system of national accounting and the ILO Manual on the measurement of volunteering. She is author of more than 250 publications and officer in the orders of the LĂ©gion dâHonneur and the Merit. She has a life-long record in researching the third sector in France and in comparative perspective.
Jacquineau Azétsop SJ was ordained priest in 2003. He received a degree in Theology at Weston Jesuit School of Theology and a degree in Public Health at the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University and continued to a Doctorate in Public Health and Social Ethics at Boston College School of Arts and Sciences. Since 2014, he holds courses at Gregoriana University in structural interventions, methodological courses and teaches sociology of health. Next year he will run courses in sociology of inequality, in sociology of suffering and a seminar on Paolo Freire.
Alejandro Crosthwaite OP is Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Professor of Catholic Social Teaching, Political Ethics, and Faith/Religion and Culture, Mass Media, and Film Studies at the Faculty of Social Sciences (FASS) at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas, Rome. He completed his doctoral studies in Theology and Society at Marquette University, Milwaukee, concentrating on Social Ethics and Catholic Social Thought as well as Mass Media studies focusing on the interaction between public theology, culture, film and social transformation.
Elizabeth Evenden-Kenyon is Research Fellow at the Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages at the University of Oxford. Elisabeth is researching upon book production and the dissemination of propaganda in England, Portugal and Spain during the early modern period. She lectures on Chris-to-Islamic relations, early modern propaganda literature, Shakespeare and his contemporaries, and book history. She is European Editor for the journal âArts and Humanities in Higher Educationâ and active member of the Marie Curie Alumni Association.
Rocco DâAmbrosio is full Professor of Political Philosophy and Political Ethics in the Faculty of Social Sciences of the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome and Professor of Ethics of Public Administration at the Department of Personnel Training of the Ministry of the Interior, Rome. He is also director of Cercasi un fine (âSeeking for a Goalâ), an Italian organizattion for people of various religions and cultures united in seeking a more just, peaceful and beautiful society. He was one of the associates in the Maecenata Instituteâs âReligious Communities and Civil Society in Europeâ project.
Anna Domaradzka is Associate Director for Research and International Cooperation as well as Assistant Professor at the Institute for Social Studies at the University of Warsaw. Until 2012 she was a Visiting Senior Fulbright Scholar conducting the research project âUrban space as a context of neighbourhood civic activities influencing quality of life of inhabitantsâ. Her areas of expertise are civil society, social movements, urban movements, urban sociology, gender sociology, sociology of science and education.
Philipp Kreutzer studied Social Science at University of Trier and Humboldt University Berlin. From 2016 until 2019 he worked for the Maecenata Foundation as a student assistant and participated in research projects concerning migration and civil society. Furthermore, he works as a trainer for political education and offers workshops concerning topics like flight, migration and globalization.
Vasilios N. Makrides studied theology at the University of Athens (1979â1983) and religious studies, history of religions and sociology of religion at Harvard University (1984â1986), as well as at the University of TĂŒbingen (1986â1991), where he also obtained his doctorate in 1991.
