CRC Handbook of Management of Radiation Protection Programs, Second Edition
About this book
CRC Handbook of Management of Radiation Protection Programs, 2nd Edition, is unique in that it offers practical guidance for managing various aspects of radiation protection programs ranging from the daily operation of a health physics office to the preparation of radiation experts for court appearances as professional witnesses. The book also covers such topics as organization and management of nonionizing radiation safety programs (with special emphasis on laser safety programs) and management of radioactive waste, personnel monitoring programs, radiation accident victims, internal exposure, relative radiotoxicity and radiation therapy patients. Other chapters discuss handling radiation accidents and education and training requirements for radiation protection. Legal aspects covered in the book include the history of radiation court cases, legal implications of record keeping, and preparation for court appearances.
CRC Handbook of Management of Radiation Protection Programs, 2nd Edition will be a valuable reference resource for medical and health physicists, industrial hygienists, physicians, nuclear engineers, radiation protection regulators, radiation emergency management agents, radiation safety committees, and managers of facilities using ionizing and nonionizing radiation sources.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING IN RADIATION PROTECTION

INTRODUCTION
Purpose and Content
The purpose of this chapter is to provide a reference on the types of education and training programs available and required in the field of radiation protection (health physics). Information presented includes lists of educational institutions, sources of information on training courses, lists of professional accrediting and certifying organizations, rationale for the development of new programs, requirements for such programs, employment opportunities afforded by the completion of such programs, and a brief introduction to methods of planning instruction and teaching techniques. A bibliography of references useful in developing and implementing education and training in radiation protection is also included.
Definitions of Education and Training
A simple compound definition distinguishing education and training may be presented as follows:
Training is the instruction that prepares a person to carry out defined tasks, simple or complex, in a correct and precise manner. Education is the program of instruction in concepts and methods that prepares the person to: (1) understand and appreciate a wide range of phenomena confronted in everyday life as well as in the workplace, in association with other human interactions; (2) understand in the context of human endeavors why the specific tasks to be performed in the special profession selected are being carried out; (3) understand how to design equipment or develop original procedures for carrying out these tasks; and (4) understand how to revise these procedures to adapt to changing requirements.
In any given education or training program, there is usually no sharp dividing line between education and training. Often a given program of instruction will provide some understanding of why a task is being carried out, as well as the specific steps and procedures to be used, in order to provide some degree of motivation and interest in the work. This overlap will be true even for some brief training sessions lasting only minutes or hours, as well as for educational programs requiring years to complete. Thus, programs of instruction usually can not be categorized according to whether they are purely education or purely training. However, as generally used in this chapter, the term “educational” will connote that the program of instruction is designed to matriculate the student toward a university or college degree, including the associate in arts (AA) degree. The term “training” will connote that the program or course is designed mainly to prepare the student to carry out specified tasks properly, whether these tasks are carried out at the technician level or by someone who is otherwise educated professionally.
