MAJOR SCALES

As we have previously said, Chords are built on notes. Those notes go together because they are from the same scale and blend well.
There are about 7 chords that each scale can create.
And those chords follow a specific formula, irrespective of the key the scale is in.
For instance, in the Major Scales, in the key of C, the chords created by the scale are as follows:
i
ii
iii
iv
v
vi
vii
C Major
D Minor
E Minor
F Major
G Major
A Minor
B Dim
In the Major Scales, in the key of D, the chords created will be as follows:
i
ii
iii
iv
v
vi
vii
D Major
E Minor
F# Minor
G Major
A Major
B Minor
C# Dim
Notice how the pattern is the same:
i
ii
iii
iv
v
vi
vii
Major

Dim
These are also known as the following:
i
ii
iii
iv
v
vi
vii
Tonic
SuperTonic
Mediant
SubDominant
Dominant
SubMediant
LeadingNote
As it is cumbersome to refer to these names, we use the numbering system (i, ii, iii, iv, v, vi, vii) to indicate the position of the chord in that scale. So, for instance, an ii, within a major scale, will always be a minor.
