PROBLEM-SOLVING INDEX

15

Introduction to the Index

DESCRIPTION OF THE INDEX

The Problem-Solving Index is provided to assist you in helping a client solve a problem. The Index is divided into two sections. Section I, ā€œEveryday Problems and Alternative Solutions to Them,ā€ lists more than 250 specific problems for which people request help. Each problem is alphabetically categorized under the headings of Education, Family and Friends, Financial, Health, Housing, Occupation, and Self-Improvement. Each specific problem is followed by a list of possible alternative solutions. This should help you in assisting a client in identifying alternatives to solve his or her problem.
Section II of the Index, ā€œThe Alternative Solutions and Their Possible Consequences,ā€ lists possible consequences, both positive and negative, that might occur were the client to select the alternative solution. This should help you in assisting a client to analyze the consequences of each alternative, and should, in turn, help the client make the best decision.
The Index is not inclusive. There may be problems people discuss with you that are not listed. You may be able to think of effective alternative solutions. It seems best to use the Index as a resource, a tool in helping a client solve a problem.

HOW TO USE THE INDEX

At the beginning of Section I is a master list of all the everyday problems included in Section I. Scanning this may help you quickly locate the specific problem being discussed. Section II similarly begins with a master list of all the alternative solutions and their possible consequences included in Section II.
In the main part of Section I, each alternative solution to a problem is followed by a number. This number refers you to the appropriate item in Section II, which lists both the positive and negative consequences that might occur if a client were to select that particular alternative.
