Before renovation

Remodelled front of existing building
This project undertook the renovation and expansion of a thoroughly inadequate library built in 1969 for a then young New England college. The front of the old building was remodelled to make its spire a beacon of radiating light and to provide a stepped proscenium at the spire’s base for socialising and frequent ceremonies and concerts.
The rear of the building was largely demolished and replaced with a larger addition now open to a wooded glade and the panorama of stream and mountain beyond. Inside, the old structure was reduced from three floors to two, merged with each other via a skylit rotunda and open balconies. There is a variety of ambiences ranging from the lively cyber céfe to the secluded team study rooms cantilevered out into the treetops.

Existing coastguard station has been enveloped by new building

Walls are cut away to reveal inner workings of building
This design is a competition-winning scheme for the new pilot station at Kvitsøy on the west coast of Norway. Rather than building next to the old building, the architects decided to build on top of it, minimising construction and strengthening the profile of the pilot station as a beacon for sailors. The existing structure forms the core of the new building, with the new construction built around it; its surface broken in places to expose the inner structure. The angled walls of the entire building are clad in a unifying coat to mirror the pitched roofs of the surrounding village, which ref...
