Research Guides and Links to Online Information
The following guides for research support literature searches in ethnomusicology and instruct users on methods and processes for research. Guides play an important role in the early stages of in-depth study, but they are also useful for consultation throughout a sequence that takes researchers from preliminary research to project completion. Research guides typically introduce disciplinary literature in organized annotated bibliographic lists or series of essays. While guides and standard bibliographies both provide lists of resources, the guides in this chapter are distinguished from many bibliographies by their instructional character. They direct researchers, and not only lead them to specific resources, but inform them about the variety and types of resources that may help them as they move forward in their quest for information. Printed and online materials help researchers navigate the complex web of information; some of the most useful also explain theoretical foundations and the research practices and methodologies for the discipline. In ethnomusicology, even the preliminary search for literature is a complex task, since the most common research journey involves exploring literature in anthropology or other social sciences, language, religion or other subjects in the humanities, music and other arts, including dance and theater. In addition, scholarship and other forms of disciplinary production involve a variety of experiences that may range from library research to fieldwork activities, musical analyses to musical performance. Ideally, the research process is a carefully constructed journey from idea to resource, from written proposal to field site, from experience in the field to integrating field data with other sources, to a final product.
Two decades ago, research guides were used primarily to identify library-based information sources. Today they may point to materials in a library, but many link users directly to bibliographic tools and other sources for information online. With wider access to information through the Internet, students and other researchers have become more independent, seeking information through electronic guides or simply using search engines. For some, using Internet guides to sources for research presents a path to the Web as the sole source for information as well. A researcher guided by both printed and electronic sources has the broadest opportunity to fully explore a topic.
This selective list provides information on both printed and electronic sources for information. Organized by topic and geographic region, the sources in this list of guides will offer the student and scholar access to information music and dance, followed by other subject areas and regional resources. The final section includes a brief listing of online information guides.
