TEACHERSâ NOTES FOR PRACTICUMS
To carry out these practicums it is desirable (though not essential) to have available a plot of ground of not less than one-half acre, preferably one acre, on which to grow materials. Substitute methods of handling the work may be used. It should have a water supply.
Although much of the material and equipment may be purchased, it will be advisable to have some growing close at hand. For example, plants suitable for layerage where they can be reached easily from the class room, so students can execute the practicum and see the results.
A plan of the plot for growing the necessary plants is given in the form below. It may take several years to establish all the materials required. This, however, should not prevent carrying on most of the class work since many practicums concern the propagation and culture of plants desired for permanent planting; for example establishing ornamentals from which to secure seeds and cutting material. In such cases material could likely be secured from locally grown shrubs, made into cuttings and planted under the instructions given in Practicums XVI to XX, then rooted the cuttings and seedlings would be potted as in Practicums XXVII and XXVIII. In this manner many permanent plants can be established for class use.
If a plot is not available the next alternate probably would be to visit places where the materials are being grown. If it is not advisable to have the class participate in the propagation or culture work, the teacher or owner should demonstrate the methods.
A greenhouse in which to carry on much of the work is also highly desirable but not essential. Hotbeds and coldframes will do nicely.
A lathhouse is so readily and economically constructed that one should be the property of every school intending to conduct practicums. It need not be an elaborate structure. Directions for building one and frames for hotbeds are given in Practicums XXV and XXVI.
A suggestion for a source of materials for some of the pract...
