Er selbst konnte in den Jahren vor dem Krieg Einblicke in die Ereignisse und Handlungen nehmen und zeigt sehr ausfĂŒhrlich die Entwicklungen in dieser Vorkriegsphase auf. Karl Helfferich (1872-1924) war als Nationalökonom und Politiker wĂ€hrend des ersten Weltkrieges zunĂ€chst StaatssekretĂ€r im Reichsschatzamt und fĂŒr die Kriegsfinanzierung zustĂ€ndig, und wurde im Mai 1916 zum Innenminister und Vizekanzler ernannt. Als Reaktion auf die Niederlage Deutschlands tritt er nach dem Krieg der Deutschnationalen Volkspartei bei und wird einer der fĂŒhrenden Politiker der extremen Rechten.
