French Foreign Legion for Beginners

A handbook for potential candidates of the Légion étrangÚre

About this book

This book is the perfect guide for anyone interested in joining the French Foreign Legion. Do you meet the entry requirements? What needs special attention? Will you be able to get out of the contract? Do you have to speak French? How fit do you really have to be? Are tattoos or glasses a problem? How can I prepare physically, etc.? All the answers meet the latest standards. - I advise no one to join the French Foreign Legion on the assumption of glamour or glory - the Author says: Destiny is no matter of chance. It is a matter of choice. It is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved. (William Jennings Bryan).

Entry requirements and conditions of engagement.
What needs special attention?

Do you have to speak French?

NO!
Knowledge of the French language is not a requirement
during the selection process.
My experience has shown that the average candidate will
be able to understand the language after only two months,
and that he will be conversing with others after about five
months.
After a year he dreams in French.
Of course, there is a lot of work to be done to learn it.
Three essential methods and techniques help aid in the
learning process.
1 – The Method KĂ©pi Blanc
As the applied teaching method.

2 – Multiple lessons

In the classroom, and during everyday activities.

3 – Own language exclusion

No master has fallen from the sky yet!

The Method Képi Blanc

The keyword is trinĂŽmage. From the very beginning,
legionnaires are grouped into three-man teams, the so-called
'trinoms'. One of them being French speaking
(Francophone). He has to ensure that the other two
understand every snatched or learned word and that they
keep on repeating it.

Learning the French language by “getting thrown in at the
deep end” makes sense from day one.

Three words are taught on a daily basis in the first hours of
every single day. This leaves about twenty hours a day
(sleep is modest at best) to understand these three words,
by constantly repeating and applying them.
The language is practiced during basic training on the
farms Bel-Air, Le-Cuin, La-Jasse and Bertrandou. These
legionnaire factories are sealed off and isolated from the
rest of the world.
The aim?
At least 100 words in the first month!

Multiple lessons

To be clear: Multiple lessons means eighty to ninety
hours! The teacher is no lesser than the boss himself; the
platoon commander, usually a young lieutenant. He takes
his job very seriously because he has to show results.
There are exercise books, school marks, tests and a bell for
recess.
