C'est par une sombre nuit que K. arrive dans un village étrange où l'attitude des habitants l'inquiète. Par ailleurs sa curiosité est attisée par l'existence d'un château inaccessible auquel ils semblent tous rendre des comptes... K., nommé arpenteur, met tout en oeuvre pour rencontrer Klamm qui appartient au Château. Mais il se heurte aux secrétaires. Ceux-ci font partie du château et constituent le lien avec le village: ils résident à l'auberge des messieurs. K s'allie avec Frieda qui devient sa fiancée après avoir été l'amie de Klamm. Les gens du village (entre autre l'hôtelière) semblent former un rempart entre lui et le château (représenté par Klamm). D'autres paraissent le soutenir comme la famille Barnabé...Ce très grand roman, posthume et inachevé, de Frank Kafka nous emporte dans un tourbillon de situations absurdes qui ne sont cependant pas sans nous rappeler certains aspects de nos sociétés modernes...
