Im Jahr 1120/21 gründete Norbert von Xanten mit Prémontré die erste Gemeinschaft der Prämonstratenser. Er legte damit den Grundstein für eine Erfolgsgeschichte, der die Prämonstratenser zu einem der wichtigsten und größten römisch-katholischen Orden regulierter Chorherren werden ließ.Ulrich Leinsle beschreibt eingängig den Ursprung, die Ausbildung der Ordensstruktur sowie die Glanzzeiten des Ordens im Mittelalter. Für den Orden folgten harte Zeiten, die im Zeichen von Reformation, Gegenreformation und Aufklärung standen. Von dort spannt der Autor den Bogen bis in die säkularisierte Gegenwart. Die Darstellung geht über die rein kirchengeschichtliche Perspektive hinaus, indem sie kulturelle und gesellschaftliche Leistungen des Ordens miteinbezieht.
