Grundlage des Bandes ist eine Studie, die zeitgleich in Deutschland, England und Australien konfessionsübergreifend durchgeführt wurde. Ziel war zu erheben, wie SchülerInnen im Rückblick auf den Religionsunterricht ihre Kenntnis biblischer Texte einschätzen, wie dieses Wissen sich objektiv darstellt und wie sie ihre hermeneutische Zugangsweise zu biblischen Texten charakterisieren. Untersucht wurde dabei, von welcher Sozialisation mit der Bibel die Befragten berichten, welche Einstellung sie zur Bibel haben, wie sich das Bibelwissen mit wachsendem Alter verändert, wie stark das Interesse heutiger Schülerinnen und Schüler am Thema Bibel ist und in welcher Weise in der Schule mit der Bibel gearbeitet wurde. Der Band macht die Auswertung der empirischen Daten fruchtbar für Grundfragen schulischer Bibeldidaktik.
