Abstract

Nanomaterials and the vast domain of nanotechnology are today in the midst of deep scientific introspection and vision. Nanomaterials are the cornerstones of nanoscience and nanotechnology endeavor today. The world of scientific challenges, the futuristic vision, and ardor of science and engineering are all the forerunners toward a new visionary era in the field of nanoscience and nanotechnology. Nanostructure science and technology is a broad and interdisciplinary area of research and development activity that has been ever-growing worldwide in the past few years. Technological and scientific validation and deep scientific verve are the pillars of research pursuit in the field of nanomaterials and engineered nanomaterials today. In this chapter, the authors discuss in depth with immense insight and far-sightedness the recent developments in nanotechnology, nanomaterials, engineered nanomaterials, and the world of nanomanufacturing. Other areas of research pursuit include the application of nanotechnology in chemical process engineering and the vast world of environmental engineering. Water purification, and water and wastewater treatment stand today at the center of deep scientific introspection and scientific forbearance. In this chapter, the authors focus on the vision, success, and ingenuity of the necessities of nanotechnology and nanomaterials in the furtherance of modern science and human society. A new dawn of human civilization will usher in the field of chemical engineering and environmental engineering as nanotechnology paves the path toward scientific ingenuity.

1.1 Introduction

Science and technology in the global scenario are surpassing one visionary boundary after another. In a similar vein, nanoscience and nanotechnology are the challenges and vision of science and technology today. Nanotechnology and nanoengineering today have diverse applications in almost every branch of science and engineering. Global climate change, environmental catastrophes, and the depletion of fossil fuel resources are veritably challenging the vast scientific and engineering landscape. Arsenic and heavy metal groundwater and drinking water contamination are tremendous issues of environmental engineering today. Sustainable development is critical as civilization and mankind move forward. The authors in this chapter deeply elucidate the recent developments in nanotechnology, nanomaterials, and engineered nanomaterials with the true vision of furtherance of science and technology. Environmental protection today is in a globally disastrous state. Industrialized and developing nations around the world are in the throes of unimaginable environmental disaster, such as heavy metal groundwater contamination, highlighting the importance of innovations, scientific instinct, and path-breaking discoveries. Environmental and energy sustainability are the needs of civilization today. This chapter opens up new thoughts and new vision in the field of nanotechnology and manufacturing. The perspectives of science and engineering of nanotechnology are changing at a rapid pace. The world today is a place of nuclear science and space technology. The scientific horizon of nanotechnology and nanomaterials is changing. Nanotechnology is gradually being integrated with diverse branches of science and engineering. This chapter aims to open up new dimensions in the field of nanomaterials and engineered nanomaterials applications throughout society. The world of science stands mesmerized with immense might, vision, and ingenuity. This chapter will go a long way in uncovering the scientific truth of nanomaterials and nanotechnology applications in chemical engineering, environmental engineering, and diverse areas of engineering science.

1.2 The aims and objectives of this study

Civilization is rapidly overcoming scientific difficulties and barriers one after the other. In a similar vein, chemical engineering and nanotechnology are avenues of new scientific and engineering ingenuity. The main aims and objectives of this study are to depict profoundly the scientific need for nanomaterials and engineered nanomaterials in building science and throughout society. Nanomanufacturing is another area of research in this chapter. Scientific advances, deep scientific fortitude, and the futuristic vision of nanotechnology will slowly unravel the success of science and engineering applications in society. Technological impasse and engineering barriers are the hallmarks of nanomanufacturing today. The authors reiterate the scientific need for nanomanufacturing in the true realization of nanotechnology and nanoengineering. Environmental remediation and sustainability are critical needs for civilization and the progress of science today. This chapter reveals the world of challenges, the futuristic vision, and alarming areas in environmental protection. One day, the global population will surely usher in a new age in the field of environmental protection and nanotechnology. This treatise also focuses on the application of nanotechnology in environmental remediation, water purification, and wastewater treatment. Sustainable development will enable freedom from scientific crises, as United Nations Sustainable Development goals are realized. The authors also pinpoint the application of energy, environmental, social, and economic sustainability in the furtherance of mankind today. Research work done in sustainability and nanotechnology is the cornerstone of this work.

1.3 The scientific doctrine of the domain of nanotechnology

Nanoscience and nanotechnology are today replete with huge scientific vision and vast scientific provenance and actions. The scientific doctrine of nanotechnology needs to be redefined as regards environmental remediation and the application of environmental engineering in society. Nanoengineering is the next generation of science. Modern manufacturing and nanomanufacturing are today at the center of this vision. Nanomaterials and engineered nanomaterials have diverse applications in all branches of science and engineering. The future research directions in the field of nanotechnology should be targeted toward greater emancipation in the fields of environmental engineering, chemical process engineering, and petroleum engineering. These areas of scientific research pursuit are critically important [1,2].

1.4 Modern science, modern manufacturing, and the nanomaterial perspective

The perspectives of science and technology of manufacturing, nanomanufacturing, and nanomaterials are path-breaking. New perspectives into the science and engineering of nanomaterials include the areas of environmental protection and environmental engineering science. Nanotechnology is a hallmark of current science. Environmental engineering and chemical process engineering are today at the critical union of vision, fortitude, and ingenuity. Modern manufacturing engineering needs to be bolstered and reorganized. In this chapter, the authors reflect deeply on the areas of manufacturing engineering and nanomanufacturing with a clear vision toward furtherance of science and engineering. Water and wastewater treatment are other areas of scientific vision and endeavor today. In the area of water treatment, nanotechnology plays an important role. Membrane separation processes and other nonconventional environmental engineering techniques are today the subjects of deep scientific integrity and vast scientific enquiry. Chemical process engineering is on the path toward huge leaps forward. Today nanotechnology is integrated with all branches of scientific research. The status of the environment in industrialized and developing nations around the world is as a critical stage. This raises the importance of nanomaterials and nanotechnology. Modern science will be able to open up new doors of innovation and scientific advances in this respect in the future [1,2].

1.5 Nanomanufacturing and the advancement of science

Nanomanufacturing and manufacturing are in the process of being revamping and undergoing vast reorganization. Science and technology in today’s world are highly retrogressive and similarly highly challenged. Environmental protection science needs to be re-envisioned and re-envisaged using scientific progress globally. The advancement of science and the sagacity of engineering science need to be reframed as environmental sustainability confronts major global issues. In this chapter, the authors reiterate the needs of environmental sustainability in the path toward environmental remediation. Today environmental engineering science involves conventional and nonconventional degradation of wastewater techniques. In this section, the authors discuss the needs of nanomanufacturing science in the furtherance of the science of nanotechnology [1,2].
Chryossolouris et al. [3] discussed with vision and scientific integrity nanomanufacturing processes in their critical review. The domain of nanoscale structures, typically below 100 nm, lies dimensionally between that of ordinary, macroscopic or mesoscale products and the other vast world of microdevices. Technological and scientific validation, verve and stance are immensely needed in the pursuit of nanotechnology research today [3]. Nanomanufacturing encompasses processes aimed at building nanoscale structures, devices, and systems in one, two, and three dimensions [3]. This paper reviews and discusses some critical problems of nanomanufacturing from the cost, production rate, quality, and flexibility points of view [3]. Manufacturing products on a small scale is addresses in a number of areas including:
  • miniature writing;
  • computer miniaturization [3];
  • miniature engineering;
  • the need to make design changes [3];
  • surgical and medical uses of miniaturization;
  • quantum devices;
  • direct synthesis of atoms [3]; and
  • the linking of biological sciences and physics [3].
The advancement and sagacity of science and engineering are path-breaking and highly visionary. The authors of this paper describe nanomanufacturing techniques, nanoscale material processing tools, nanomanufacturing drivers, and nanomanufacturing opportunities [3]. The advanced and increasing interest in the research potential as well as research and development funding organizations across the world in the last few years illustrates the need for nanotechnologies in all research initiative sectors globally [3].
