Pedro Antonio de Alarcón contaba 21 años cuando una mañana de febrero de 1855 se encontró indefenso frente a la pistola de Heriberto García de Quevedo, insigne poeta y dramaturgo venezolano con quien se batía en duelo, por haber vilipendiado Alarcón a Isabel II y a su gobierno desde las columnas del periódico El Látigo. Alarcón descargó primero y casi mata a uno de los padrinos, pues no sabía usar las armas. García de Quevedo, diestro con la pistola, apuntó a su contrincante y después de escuchar la tercera palmada, levantó la mira y disparó hacia el cielo. Perdonó la vida a Alarcón por respeto a su genio literario. La muerte permea los dos relatos de este volumen: redentora y afable en uno, horrible y fatídica en el otro.
