LEARNING IN THE 21ST CENTURY

WHAT WE NEED TO DO IS ALWAYS LEAN INTO THE FUTURE;
WHEN THE WORLD CHANGES AROUND YOU
AND WHEN IT CHANGES AGAINST YOU - YOU
HAVE TO LEAN INTO THAT AND FIGURE OUT
WHAT TO DO
BECAUSE COMPLAINING ISN'T A STRATEGY.

DEVELOPING SKILLS
It seems generally accepted that formal education needs to be adapted to tackle the complex global challenges.
It raises the question of whether learners possess the critical thinking, creativity, and collaborative and communicative skills needed to cope with the unexpected developments they face.
This involves developing personal skills such as initiative, resilience, responsibility and creativity, social skills such as teamwork, networking, empathy and compassion, and learning skills such as management, organization and metacognitive skills.
All this calls for a new model of learning for the twenty-first century – which includes new methods and new trainer´s skills, attitudes and behavior.
Teachers will design sophisticated learning activities; students will learn at any time or anywhere at a pace that is comfortable for them, using the tools they choose. 21st Century teachers become trainingexperts who assess the skills of their students and identify and design learning activities to help them understand more deeply.
Let´s start to use some new skills!
On the following pages you´ll find
- A self-check regarding competence orientation
- As a motivating learning method: Flipped classroom
- As a teaching strategy: The Jigsaw Method
- As a learning strategy: Peer Support
- A training transfer strategy
- Several brain based learning tips
So - find out what is new for you.
COMPETENCE ORIENTED EDUCATION
Competence-oriented education is based on the idea that learners learn through experience and discovery. Learners are actively involved in the learning situation. They learn best in meaningful contexts and in cooperation and interaction with others and with their environment. This allows them to acquire knowledge, to construct knowledge and to review their newly constructed ideas with those of others.
By the way: This does not mean that teachers should neglect to offer learners new horizons and perspectives and enthusiasm for things they may never have heard of.
Important features of this approach are:
- Meaningful contexts – which include everyday experiences of learners in problem-oriented tasks
- Room for initiative and creativity
- Interactive learning – with peers as well as with trainers and other persons
- Constructive learning – one´s own knowledge
- Reflective Learning – about learner´s approach and results
- Personal learning with which learner identifies
- Insights from neurobiology
This means that teachers and trainers need to understand themselves as learners and that they have a differentiated perception of an individual’s learning processes. And educators must follow coaching principles to help learners better understand their abilities – without installing judgemental assessments.
Try the following statements for a self-check:
| SELF-CHECK: COMPETENCE ORIENTATION | ALWAYS | MOSTLY | SOMETIMES | NEVER |
| It is easy for me to get involved in the thought processes of my students | ||||
| I use methods that promote communication among students and I use cooperative forms of learning | ||||
| I promote reflexive learning processes with different instruments (e.g. a learning diary) | ||||
| I use to strengthen self-competence (e.g. the feedback method) | ||||
| In counselling situations with my students, emphasis is placed on individual strengths | ||||
| I see myself as a learner and I strive to promote my own development | ||||
| My lessons are designed so that my students experience problems and difficulties in the learning processes as challenges that they can master alone | ||||
| I plan project-oriented, interdisciplinary classes |
FLIPPED CLASSROOM
One method to use online platforms as youtube or , of course, also your own personal platform for filesharing, is the flipped classroom.
THE STRUCTURE
The idea of Flipped Classroom - or Inverted Learning or Inverted Classroom - is that basic content and information are taken out of the classroom training and are made available as an advanced video on an online platform. In this teaching method, therefore, the usual activities inside and outside the training are "turned around" - because we have been learning since school, in which the "new" is presented in class and we individually work on this at home. This procedure is now (partially) reversed; important content is already known when the participants meet in the presence event, which is used to deepen what they have learned.

Obviously, some problems are solved and advantages are used:
For companies
- The problem: Their employees participate in longer, multi-day trainings, and costs and absenteeism arise; they have an interest in having their employees participating in short and manageable face-to-face trainings
- The advantage: Inverted Learning removes the information transfer from the presence phase and thus reduces the total attendance training time. Costs for longer absence from work and for longer training will be reduced
For trainers
- The problem: Trainers are faced with the task of conve...
