These poems contemplate the poet's native land of Russia, while at the same time casting a jaundiced eye on the alien culture of America, where he spent the final years of his life.

Whether absorbed by the world of literature (particularly his fellow poets) or relating real-life experiences, Loseff conjures up a restless, frequently disturbing universe, full of complex imagery, rich literary allusion and formal experiment.

Lev Loseff was born in 1937, grew up in Leningrad and worked as a journalist in northern Sakhalin, and as a magazine editor and children's playwright. He emigrated to America in 1976, where he later taught Russian literature at Dartmouth College, New Hampshire. He died in the USA in 2009.

G.S. Smith was Professor of Russian at the University of Oxford from 1986 to 2003. He translated the bilingual anthology Contemporary Russian Poetry (1993), and worked in collaboration with Lev Loseff for many years.

Брюхатый поп широким махом

за труповозкою кадит.

Лепечет скрученный бандит:

«Я не стрелял, клянусь Аллахом».

Вливается в пробои свет,

задерживается на детях, женщинах,

их тряпках, их мозгах, кишечниках.

Он ищет Бога. Бога нет.

A big-bellied priest censering bodily

behind the corpse carrier.

And a trussed-up ruffian babbling

‘I didn’t shoot, I swear by Allah’.

Light streams in through the breaches,

lingers on children, women, on

their rags, their entrails, their brains.

Looking for God. There is no God.

Козлищ как не приравняешь к овцам?

Что-то есть военное в церковном.

Ризы, пригвожденные к иконам‚

отливают золотом погонным.

Словно в блиндаже фитиль огарка.

Меньше света от него, чем чада.

Роспись на стене дрожит, как карта,

где кольцо сжимают силы Ада.

Золотого купола редиска.

Звонницы издерганные нервы.

Пономарь с косичкой, как радистка.

«Первый! Шлите подкрепленье! Первый?»

Для чего еще духовным лицам

лбами прикасаться к половицам,

если им не чудится оттуда

приближенье рокота и гуда.

Подползают к храму иномарки,

неотвратные, как танки НАТО.

Бабки тушат пальцами огарки.

Кто их знает, может, так и надо?

Who says sheep are different from goats?

Church and Army have their communalities.

– Those vestments tacked to icons, their gold

glittering like epaulettes.

You could be in a dugout: candle stub

whose wick gives off more soot than light;

frescoes shimmering like a campaign map,

the hosts of Hell closing in tight.

Golden cupola like a radio dish.

Jangled nerves from the bell tower.

Pigtailed sexton like a signa...
