Die Autorin rekonstruiert anhand zahlreicher deutscher und französischer Quellen und der Methoden der Täterforschung den komplexen Unterdrückungsapparat während des Zweiten Weltkriegs in Lyon und beleuchtet jenseits des Mythos einer allmächtigen Gestapo die Frage nach den Tätern. Lyon nimmt als «Hauptstadt des Widerstands» eine zentrale Rolle im französischen Kollektivgedächtnis ein. Erinnerung wie Forschung sind dabei eng mit der Person Klaus Barbies verbunden, der durch seine Tätigkeit als Gestapo-Chef von Lyon und seinen Prozess 1987 zum Hauptsymbol der NS-Verbrechen in Frankreich wurde. Dieser einseitige Fokus ließ die Rolle weiterer Sipo-SD-Mitglieder und erst recht der militärischen Besatzer völlig in den Hintergrund treten. Beispielhaft dafür steht Werner Knab, Oberhaupt der Lyoner Sipo-SD.
