Das Buch gewährt einen Rückblick auf die Geschichte der Kinderkrippen und führt zur Frage der «sicheren Bindung» (Bowlby), der Schlüsselfrage frühkindlicher Entwicklung. Historisch ist diese Bindung bis in die jüngste Zeit hinein kaum beachtet worden. Was bedeutet eine «sichere Bindung» des Kindes und welche Voraussetzungen erfordert sie? Wie können Krippen diese Aufgabe unterstützen und welche Kriterien sollten sie erfüllen? Neben den Krippenkonzepten in der ehemaligen DDR und der Bundesrepublik stehen sieben weitere pädagogische Konzepte im Fokus: Ihre pädagogischen Theorien und deren Folgen in der Praxis werden aus der Perspektive einer konsequenten Selbstbestimmung auch schon des kleinsten Kindes diskutiert.
