Always remember, iCAN is an acronym, series of affirmations, attitude, and action-focused strategies to facilitate success of precollege and college students as well as recent graduates and experienced candidates.

Chapter 2

Develop Targeted Documentation

To reflect, step 2 of ten states: Draft, finalize, then disseminate targeted résumés, CVs, cover letters, networking notes, follow-up notes, applications, recommendations, essays, project and research abstracts, and other materials that reflect goals and support your candidacy for employment, internships or admissions. Don’t fear focus nor the power of targeted documentation.

Below is a sample “cover note” (ideally less than 300 words and transmitted as an e-mail) responding to a posted opportunity. Sample targeted résumés, project abstract pages, and additional documents appear on subsequent pages. When reviewing each, think about whether you might adapt their format, content and style; and be inspired to draft your initial (or next) draft. After you create a draft, use critiquing checklists (pages 31–35) to help you improve your work and ultimately, finalize distribution-ready docs. Some samples reveal how international students studying in the US can best present qualifications and address issues related to visa status also illustrate how project abstracts can reveal evidence of skills required to succeed in many positions.

• Provide quantitative research support for market and credit analysis, accounting, and account management efforts.
• Contribute to Global Transaction Banking, Corporate Finance, Market Risk Management, or other areas.
• Apply skills evidenced via sophisticated academic and internship projects and documents; delivering well-conceived and detailed economic statements, risk assessments, and other financial reports.
• Complete assignments involving analyzing trends, forecasts, and performance, and operational models.
• Collect, analyze, collate, and report on issues pertaining profitability and return on investment, appropriately presenting recommendations and inspiring managerial decisions.
• Use multicultural and multilingual abilities to address international client issues and related projects.
• Employ investment banking and analytic fundamentals to yield innovative ideas and creative client solutions.

During initial and follow-up discussions, I will expand upon the above, what appears on the résumé, and what is detailed on the supplemental project abstract page. And I will reveal how conducting research and creating PowerPoints on economic trends for European countries and on green market’s influences in corporate sustainability evidence my potential to excel this summer and, after, build a career with Deutsche Bank.
