About This Book

"I lived a life. Who can really say that about themselves?" That is how, towards the end of the book, the main protaganist of Martin Vop?nka's novel The Back of Beyond valuates his life. This novel is the story of an successful middle-aged man, who in spite of his affluence, lacks fulfillment. After the tragic death of his wife he is left alone with an eight-year-old child. He realizes that if he wants to live up to the role of a parent that has unexpectedly been places before him, he has to fundamentally change. He therefore sets out for a vacation trip - a journey to the back of beyond that doesn't end with the vacation. Without telling anyone, father and son travel, from city to city, from country to country. It is a dual travelogue where along with depictions of exotic places another journey takes place. One that travels deep into the human souls. Beside the fact The Back of the Beyond is a stylistic gem, the book is very sensitive and suggestive. The story is uniquely gentle and pleasant.
