HOW TO GROW
Sow seeds under glass in spring; they need a minimum of 16°C/61°F to germinate, with optimum growing temperatures of 20–30°C/68–86°F. Allow to grow to 15cm/6in tall before hardening off and planting in their final positions; at the same time, stake plants. Pinch out any strong growing tips, to encourage bushy plants.
GROWING TIP
Soaking seeds in warm water for several hours before sowing will give better germination rates.
NOTABLE CULTIVARS
• ‘Burgundy’ has red skin.
• ‘Clemson’s Spineless’ is extremely vigorous.

Okra oil is being investigated as a biodiesel, which may be able to power the cars of the future.
