Creating shadow
Anette Sommerseth
This charmingly geometric and abstract piece from Anette, titled ‘Shadows’, features a sunset resting behind a mountain range, with isolated trees in the foreground creating shadows on the flat terrain behind.
A simple horizontal rectangle makes up the majority of this piece; a section has been cut out for the mountains, trees and grassland to sit within, while a basic circle for the sun sits behind. Anette has drawn solid, clean lines to form the basis of the illustration, and her skill in visualising structure is present in the detail of the mountains. Creating shadow in the foreground has allowed this piece to feel as if there’s distance between the viewer and the trees.
Dimensions
21 × 14.8 cm
Materials
200 gsm Canson mixed-media paper

Tip To create effective shadows in your own illustrations, pay attention to where the light source originates from and base the angle of the shadow on that particular direction.

High concentration
Christa Rijneveld
This remarkably bold and detailed piece by Christa consists of a large number of circles and lines, creating a composition that gives an accurate representation of Monte Fitz Roy, the mountain in Patagonia from which the artwork takes its title of ‘Fitz Roy’.
Christa has used ink-blot circles to great effect by scaling them down as they reach the horizon to create contrast and a sense of depth to the sky. Adding to this, she has used a mass of intertwining lines to build up the structure of the mountainscape and rough terrain. White space has been used tactically to represent level ground, with a small amount of hatching detail to give the impression of flat terrain.
Dimensions
22.86 × 30.48 cm
Materials
160 gsm mixed-media paper

Tip Try reproducing the style of circle Christa has used to represent sky in your own illustration, making sure to scale down each circle as it gets closer to the horizon.

Detailing trunks
Josefine Svärd
An intricate wilderness drawing, ‘Camping with Giants’ by Swedish illustrator and designer Josefine depicts a lone tent nestling under a group of towering trees.
The solid black tone and the lonesome nature of the trees and tent make the whole composition stand out against the white background. A few added touches of stippling at the base of the tent and the surrounding area lend life a...
