Cos'è una cooperativa e come si organizza? Quali sono i fattori che ne determinano il successo, e quali sono i processi di sviluppo di questa specifica organizzazione che si è diffusa a partire dalle mutate condizioni economiche e sociali avvenute con le rivoluzioni industriali? Le risposte a questi interrogativi sono da rintracciare nell'analisi del cooperativismo in quanto fenomeno sociologicamente rilevante. Dopo una disamina storica sulla diffusione internazionale del movimento (dalle prime cooperative di consumo, di credito, di produzione e sociali, fino al cooperativismo digitale) il testo tratta dell'attuale importanza di questa forma d'impresa per lo sviluppo economico e sociale e offre una prospettiva d'analisi del mercato scevra dai dogmi dell'autoequilibrio e della provvidenziale "mano invisibile". Invita, inoltre, a considerare gli scambi tra gli operatori a partire dalla "visibilità " delle loro specificità motivazionali, valoriali e culturali. L'impianto teorico di sfondo, l'evidenze empiriche e le analisi econometriche dimostrano come le cooperative si diffondano in relazione a fattori ambientali e con processi di isomorfizzazione. In taluni casi, quest'ultimi, si traducono nel "camouflage isomorfo cooperativistico" ad opera di cooperative "spurie" che provocano spiazzamento competitivo a danno di quelle "autentiche" le quali, invece, svolgono le proprie attività in conformità ai principi d'uguaglianza, democraticità , sussidiarietà e mutualità .
