Johann Wolfgang (von) Goethe (né le 28 août 1749 à Francfort et mort le 22 mars 1832 (à 82 ans) à Weimar, est un romancier, dramaturge, poète, théoricien de l'art et homme d'État allemand.
L'œuvre littéraire de Goethe inclut la poésie, le théâtre, l'épopée, l'autobiographie, la théorie littéraire ainsi que des écrits scientifiques, Goethe étant passionné entre autres par l'optique, la géologie et la botanique. De plus, sa correspondance est d'une grande importance littéraire. Son roman, Les Souffrances du jeune Werther le rendit célèbre en Europe.
