François Seurel, 15 ans, et Augustin Meaulnes, 17 ans, sont tous deux élèves au cours supérieur de Sainte-Agathe, un petit village du Haut-Berry inspiré d'Épineuil-le-Fleuriel, et, comme lui, situé par l'auteur dans le Cher, près de Vierzon. Lors d’une escapade, Augustin Meaulnes arrive par hasard dans un domaine mystérieux où se déroule une fête étrange, poétique et pleine d'enfants. Alain-Fournier, pseudonyme d'Henri-Alban Fournier, né le 3 octobre 1886 à La Chapelle-d'Angillon dans le Cher et tué au combat le 22 septembre 1914 (à 27 ans) à Saint-Remy-la-Calonne, est un écrivain français, dont l’œuvre la plus célèbre est Le Grand Meaulnes (1913).
