Im Jahr 1849 entsandte Theodor Fliedner vier Diakonissen in die USA und gab damit den Impuls zur Entstehung einer zwar nicht immer erfolgreichen, aber ungeheuer vielfƤltigen amerikanischen Diakonissenbewegung. Diese war geprƤgt durch den wirtschaftlich-gesellschaftlichen Wandel des spƤten 19. Jahrhunderts, die Frauenbewegung und die Entstehung der professionellen Krankenpflege und Sozialarbeit. Die amerikanische Diakonissenarbeit ist vor allem aber auch ein Teil deutsch-amerikanischer Kultur, eng verknĆ¼pft mit der Geschichte der deutschen Amerika-Auswanderung. Wie wurde das Kaiserswerther Modell interpretiert, amerikanisiert und verƤndert? Die vorliegende Studie geht diesen Fragen unter einer bewusst transatlantischen Perspektive nach und untersucht sowohl die Geschichte einzelner Institutionen als auch individuelle Biographien.
