Das Wunder von Volkenroda" – so titelte 2001 die Wochenzeitung "Die Zeit" über den Wiederaufbau des Klosters Volkenroda. 1990 war die halb verfallene Klosteranlage in Thüringen weithin unbekannt. Umso erstaunlicher erscheint der bauliche und geistliche Wiederaufbau, der das Kloster zu einem einladenden Ort der Begegnung zwischen den Konfessionen und Menschen aus Ost- und Westdeutschland werden ließ. So zogen kurz nach der Wiedervereinigung Deutschlands zwei westdeutsche Bruderschaften (Jesus-Bruderschaft Gnadenthal und Christusbruderschaft Selbitz) in das ostdeutsche Dorf. Diese einmalige Situation bot die Chance, langjährige Ost-West-Interaktionen im ländlichen Raum zu analysieren: An welchen Punkten konnte man sich verständigen? Welche Prägungen erschwerten die Begegnung? Diesen Fragen geht die kirchengeschichtliche Studie mittels Interviews nach, die der Oral History verbunden sind.
