Von der Evolution im unendlichen Spiel kosmischer Zufälle hervorgebracht, erweist sie sich als ein kosmisches Datum.Im Lebensprozess von allem Anfang an verankert, versteht Jonas Subjektivität ontologisch und nicht transzendental. Als Wille zum Leben ist sie auch entscheidendes Motiv für das Prinzip Verantwortung. Ohne Subjektivität – ihre Freiheit, Verantwortungsfähigkeit und die Hütung des Menschenbildes als Imago Dei – erscheint Jonas die Weiterwohnlichkeit der Erde in höchstem Maße gefährdet. Ob jedoch die Wahrung menschlicher Würde ohne die Wiedergewinnung der Kategorie des Heiligen überhaupt möglich ist, bleibt für ihn letztlich eine offene Frage.
