From the Old Testament and From the New. Contributions to the Reassessment of their Relation]In 2015 a debate arose about the canonical status of the Old Testament which met with a considerable media response. The starting point was the publication of a "provocative" article by Notger Slenczka in which he argued that Schleiermacher, Harnack and Bultmann were right when they demanded the downgrading of the canonical significance of the Old Testament â but for other reasons as they had put forward. This is a serious issue: the canonical status of the Old Testament is due to the fact that the church sees the Old Testament as a testimony for Jesus Christ. But is this position tenable in view of the Christian-Jewish dialogue? What hermeneutic principles guide the church's approach to the Old Testament? How does it change in view of a historical approach to the texts? The article of Slenzka and a series of clarifying and explanatory texts providing further information are included in this volume.
