Am 2. April 2017 jährt sich zum 200. Mal der Todestag von Johann Heinrich Jung-Stilling. Geboren 1740 im Siegerland als Sohn eines frommen Dorfschneiders, legte er einen einzigartigen Karriereweg zum Mediziner, Hochschulprofessor für Wirtschaftslehre und Hofrat zurück. Goethe, den Jung-Stilling während seines Medizinstudiums in Straßburg kennengelernte, regte ihn zur Abfassung seiner Autobiographie an, überarbeitete den ersten Teil und beförderte ihn zum Druck. Dies war der Anfang einer Schriftstellerlaufbahn. Neben Lehrbüchern verfasste Jung-Stilling in großem Umfang Literatur für das Volk – Romane, Erzählungen und vor allem religiöse Schriften. In einer zunehmend religionskritischen Umwelt wollte er eine Frömmigkeit verteidigen, wie er sie aus pietistischen Traditionen kannte. Dieser Band bietet in fünf thematischen Rubriken Texte von Jung-Stilling, die eine Annäherung an sein Wirken und sein Selbstverständnis als religiöser Volksschriftsteller ermöglichen.[Neither Calvinist nor Moravian nor Pietist. Born in 1740 in Siegerland as the son of a pious village tailor, Jung-Stilling build a unique career as a physician, university professor of economics and "Hofrat". In Straßburg where he studied medicine he met Goethe who inspired him to write his autobiography. This was the beginning of his career as a writer. Besides textbooks Jung-Stilling wrote literature for the people on a large scale: novels, stories and above all pious literature. In an increasingly religions-critical context he wanted to defend a piety which he knew well from Pietism. The volume presents, in five thematic sections, texts by Jung-Stilling which allow an approach to his work and self-image as a religious popular writer.
