Obwohl die theologische Arbeit in der DDR Karl Barth nicht immer und überall in gleicher Intensität rezipierte, gehörte seine Theologie zweifellos zu ihren wichtigsten Referenzkonzeptionen. Durch den »Brief an einen Pfarrer in der DDR« und das Gutachten zu den »Zehn Artikeln über Freiheit und Dienst der Kirche« griff Barth auch direkt in die Diskussion über den Weg der Kirche in der DDR ein. Die in diesem Band gesammelten Beiträge stellen dar und analysieren, wie einzelne Theologen Barth rezipierten und welche Rolle seine Theologie in der Arbeit kirchlicher Gremien spielte (am Beispiel der EKU). Außerdem werden die durch Staat und Partei gesteuerte Rezeption Barths sowie die Bedeutung thematisiert, die sein Denken für Akteure des Gefangenenfreikaufs hatte.
