Religionswissenschaft ist seit ihren Anfängen im 19. Jahrhundert der Entwurf einer säkularen Wissenschaft von der Religion gewesen. Ihre auf dem Kongress der "International Association for the History of Religion" 1960 in Marburg verabredete Festlegung auf eine kulturwissenschaftliche Methodik wurde vielfach so gefĂźllt, dass die Religionswissenschaft zur Agentin der damaligen Version der Säkularisierungstheorie wĂźrde â der Annahme nämlich, dass Modernisierung weltweit zur aufgeklärten Umformung und letztlich zum Verschwinden von Religion fĂźhren wĂźrde.Die EinfĂźhrung der Diskursanalyse nach Michel Foucault als Leitmethode in der Kulturwissenschaft hat die Religionswissenschaft gezwungen, sich intensiv mit der Frage der eurozentrischen Prägung ihres Religionsbegriffs zu beschäftigen. Eine kritische diskursanalytische Aufarbeitung ihrer eigenen Bindung an die nicht minder eurozentrische klassische Säkularisierungstheorie steht jedoch weithin noch aus. Andreas Feldtkeller leistet hier Abhilfe, er sieht die Religionswissenschaft der Zukunft als eine säkulare, aber nicht säkularistische Wissenschaft.
