About This Book

Now in its fifth edition, French Grammar in Context presents a unique and exciting approach to learning grammar.

Authentic texts from a rich variety of sources, literary and journalistic, are used as the starting point for the illustration and explanation of key areas of French grammar. Each point is consolidated with a wide range of written and spoken exercises. Grammar is presented not as an end in itself, but as a tool essential to enjoying French, understanding native speakers, and communicating effectively with them.

Literary texts and poems are taken from renowned French authors such as Albert Camus, Émile Zola, AndrĂ© Malraux, Alain Robbe-Grillet, Stendhal, and Jacques PrĂ©vert. News sources include LibĂ©ration, Le Point, Marianne, and Le Monde Diplomatique, in addition to articles from regional papers such as Ouest-France and La Voix du Nord. Lifestyle articles are included from magazines such as Elle.

This fifth edition has been updated to include new texts for Chapters 24 and 25 and two new revision texts. In addition, this new edition is supported by a revised and extended companion website that offers a wealth of additional interactive exercises to practise and reinforce the material covered.

French Grammar in Context is aimed at intermediate and advanced students and is ideal for both independent and class-based study.

La Provence, terre de lumiĂšre

Vincent Van Gogh Ă©touffe Ă  Paris. Il
part chercher le soleil à Arles. C’est là,
dans cette ancienne cité de la Gaule
romaine, ancrĂ©e aujourd’hui dans le
5delta du RhĂŽne, que le peintre trouve la
lumiùre qui va transformer son art
.
30 bourgeoise. Aix-en-Provence, ville
d’eau, ville d’art, a vu grandir Paul
Sainte-Victoire. MĂȘme dĂ©garni de sa
couronne d’arbres, ce bloc de calcaire
est lumiĂšre. La montagne se dresse,
grise, bleue ou beige mais toujours
45majestueuse comme au bout du ciel.

The present in the text

1 USAGE

a Present
The present tense is frequently used in the same way as it is in English, to convey facts and actions going on in the present.
This can be a state of affairs, e.g. sait (line 20) or a timeless fact/situation, e.g. donne (line 35), mĂšne (line 38), se dresse (line 43).
b Past: the ‘historic present’
The present can be used to express past actions. This is far more frequent in French than it is in English. The narrator uses the present as a descriptive or narrative tense in order to give more immediate imp...
